Details that can change your plans

The eVisa application requires six months of passport validity

Myanmar's Ministry of Hotels and Tourism says a passport must have at least six months of validity for the tourist eVisa. Its page does not say whether the six months are counted from application, arrival or departure. U.S. guidance specifies six months beyond arrival; UK guidance says the passport must expire six months after arrival; Canada advises six months beyond expected departure. Check the rule for your passport and itinerary with a Myanmar mission if timing is close.

Official guidance

Use the eVisa approval letter within 90 days

The Ministry says the approval letter is valid for 90 days from its issue date. This is the period to use the approval letter to enter; the permitted stay after arrival is 28 days.

Official guidance

Allow at least three working days for eVisa processing

Myanmar says normal tourist eVisa processing takes a minimum of three working days, starting after the application is submitted, payment succeeds and the acknowledgement email is sent. The Ministry says that acknowledgement is normally sent within one hour of successful payment; three working days is a minimum, not a guaranteed approval deadline.

Official guidance

The tourist eVisa is single-entry and has limited entry points

The Ministry's current page lists Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw international airports and Kawthaung International Land Border Checkpoint for eVisa entry; it says an eVisa cannot be used at a seaport. Entry and border access can change: New Zealand's current advice says there are no legal land crossing points into Myanmar, so do not rely on Kawthaung without reconfirming directly with Myanmar authorities and your carrier.

Official guidance

New Zealand currently advises against travel to Myanmar

New Zealand SafeTravel advises New Zealanders not to travel to Myanmar and says there are no legal land crossing points into the country. Review its current advice before making plans. This travel warning is separate from the tourist visa requirement.
