Check Italy’s entry requirements before a Vatican visit

The public Vatican Museums entrance is in Rome, so most visitors must first meet Italy’s entry rules. Italy requires a recognized travel document, documents supporting the purpose and conditions of the stay, sufficient funds for the visit and return, and a visa when required. Border authorities may refuse entry even if you hold a visa. Check the rules for your passport and residence before traveling; a Vatican ticket is not permission to enter Italy.

Official guidance

EES checks take place at Italy’s Schengen border

The EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational. If you are a non-EU national making a short stay and are not exempt, Italy records your passport details, facial image, fingerprints and entry/exit data when you cross into Schengen. This check happens at the Italian border, not at Vatican City. You do not apply for EES in advance. Residence-permit, long-stay-visa and other exemptions apply; check the linked EU guidance for the full list.

Official guidance

ETIAS is not accepting applications yet for Italy entry

If you are visa-exempt for Italy/Schengen and your passport is subject to ETIAS, you do not need to apply or pay now: the system is not operating and is not accepting applications. The EU plans to start it in the last quarter of 2026 but has not announced the date. Check again before travel and apply only through the official EU site or app after it opens. ETIAS concerns entry into Italy/Schengen, not a separate Vatican permit; residence and family status may change whether you need it.

Museum tickets are separate from travel permission

If you plan to enter the Vatican Museums, use their official ticket site. A museum booking does not replace any visa or entry permission needed for Italy.
