Entry Requirements

Visa Requirement

Qatar generally requires all non-citizens to hold a valid visa or electronic travel authorization before traveling to the country. However, citizens of over 100 countries are eligible for a free visa on arrival, and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals can enter with just a national ID card. All travelers must have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Qatar, except for visa-on-arrival passengers who may be allowed with three months validity. You will be denied entry if your passport is invalid or reported lost or stolen.

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Qatar. Citizens of certain countries eligible for visa on arrival may be accepted with a passport valid for at least three months at the time of entry.

Mandatory Documentation

All travelers must present a valid passport and a confirmed return or onward ticket upon arrival. Depending on your nationality and visa type, you may also need to show a hotel reservation booked through Discover Qatar (the official hotel booking platform), proof of sufficient funds (credit card or cash), or a host's address. Electronic travel authorization applicants require a bio-data page of their passport, a recent photograph, and a return/onward ticket.

Travelers transiting through Hamad International Airport do not require a visa if they depart within 24 hours and remain airside.

Denial & Appeals

You may appeal the decision by submitting a request through the same online platform, providing additional documents or clarification. There is no formal independent review body; appeals are handled by the Ministry of Interior. For embassy-issued visas, contact the diplomatic mission that processed your application.

Common Denial Reasons

  • Incomplete or incorrect application details.
  • Insufficient or invalid supporting documents (e.g., expired passport, missing hotel booking).
  • Failure to meet genuine visitor requirements (e.g., unclear travel purpose).
  • Criminal record or security concerns.
  • Previous visa violations or overstays in Qatar or other countries.
  • Inability to demonstrate sufficient funds for the stay.
  • Nationality not eligible for the applied visa type.

Stay Guidelines & Regulations

No Work Allowed

Tourist, transit, and visitor visas strictly prohibit any form of paid or unpaid employment. Only business or work visa holders may engage in work-related activities as specified on their visa.

Overstay Penalties

Staying beyond the authorized period results in fines. The fine amount is determined by the Ministry of Interior and must be paid before leaving Qatar. Overstaying may also lead to visa cancellation, a re-entry ban, and potential legal consequences.

Mandatory Health Insurance for Stays Over 30 Days

If you plan to stay in Qatar for more than 30 days, you must purchase health insurance from a registered Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) provider before travel. The standard premium is QAR 50 (approx. $14 USD) per person per month.

Visa Extension

Tourist visas (Hayya A1) can be extended once for an additional 30 days. Apply through the MOI portal or at a service center before the visa expires. Failure to extend may result in overstay fines.

No Address Registration Required for Short Stays

Visitors on short-term visas (up to 30 days) are not required to register their address with authorities. Longer-term residents must obtain a Qatar ID (QID) and register their residential address.

Exit Permits

Previously required for some residents, but as of recent reforms, most travelers can leave Qatar without an exit permit. Check the latest regulations if you are a former resident or on a special visa.

Health Requirements

Vaccination Requirements

No routine vaccinations are mandatory for entry to Qatar. However, travelers coming from countries with a risk of polio transmission may be required to present a polio vaccination certificate. Yellow fever vaccination is not a general requirement but may be asked if traveling from an endemic country. Check with your local health authority before travel.

Health Examinations

No health examination is required for tourist or short-stay visas. Work visa and residence permit applicants must undergo a medical examination (including chest X-ray and blood tests) as part of the process.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for any stay exceeding 30 days. It must be purchased from a provider registered with the Ministry of Public Health before you travel. The minimum coverage is QAR 50 (approx. $14 USD) per month. Failure to obtain insurance may result in entry denial or fines.

Financial Requirements

Tourist Visa (Hayya A1/A3) Proof of Solvency

Applicants may be required to show a credit card or debit card with a balance of at least 1,000 US dollars (or equivalent in Qatari riyals) upon arrival. Some nationalities must present QAR 5,000 in cash or credit card balance. Business visitors may need an invitation letter from a Qatari company.

Visa on Arrival Proof of Solvency

For certain nationalities, you must present a credit card or at least QAR 5,000 in cash (approx. $1,370 USD) if entering for tourism. Business travelers must provide an invitation letter from a Qatari company.

Family Visit Visa Proof of Solvency

The sponsor (resident family member) must demonstrate sufficient income to support the visitor. Typically a salary certificate and bank statements are required during the application process.

Work Visa Proof of Solvency

Not applicable; the employer covers financial requirements and provides sponsorship.
