Entry Requirements

Visa Requirement

India generally requires all non-citizens to hold a valid visa or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card before traveling to the country. Exceptions exist for nationals of certain countries under bilateral agreements (e.g., visa-free entry for short stays from Nepal and Bhutan) and for Visa on Arrival available to citizens of Japan, South Korea, and UAE (only those who previously held an Indian e-Visa or regular visa) at selected international airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad). All other foreign nationals must obtain either a regular/paper visa from an Indian Mission/Post or an e-Visa (limited categories) from the Bureau of Immigration.

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of your intended arrival in India. It must have at least two blank pages for immigration stamping. Non-machine-readable passports will be denied entry.

Mandatory Documentation

All travelers must present a valid passport and a valid Indian visa or OCI card upon arrival. Since October 2025, all foreign nationals entering India have the option to submit an online e-arrival card (available up to 72 hours before travel) instead of a paper arrival form. The paper form will still be accepted until March 2026. Ensure the immigration officer stamps your passport on entry; you will need this stamp when departing to prove you did not overstay.

Additional Requirements for eVisa Applicants

Applicants must travel on the passport on which the e-Visa was granted. If you obtain a new passport after receiving your e-Visa, you may enter India on the new passport provided you also carry the old passport with the valid e-Visa. International travelers must hold a return or onward journey ticket and have sufficient funds for their stay. E-Visa is not available to diplomatic/official passport holders, Laissez-passer holders, or individuals on a parent’s/spouse’s passport.

Visa Types

e-Tourist Visa

For tourism, casual visits, or short-term non-business purposes. Available to eligible passport holders. Multiple entries permitted. Validity options:

  • 5-year validity (multiple entries, up to 90 days per stay): USD 80 (approx. $80 USD). A maximum of two e-Tourist visas may be issued in one calendar year. The 30-day visa does not allow extensions; longer validity visas may be extended in limited circumstances.

e-Business Visa

For short-term business activities such as meetings, trade talks, or establishing business contacts. Valid for 1 year (multiple entries, up to 180 days per stay) – fee USD 80 (approx. $80 USD). Requires a business card or invitation letter from an Indian company.

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card

Not a visa but a lifelong multi-entry permit for Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) who do not hold a passport of India. OCI cardholders are exempt from visa requirements for travel to India. They must carry their OCI card along with a valid foreign passport.

How to Apply

  1. Determine whether you are eligible for an e-Visa (tourism, business, medical, conference, student, or attendant) or if a regular paper visa from an Indian Mission/Post is required. Pakistani passport holders and persons of Pakistani origin must apply for a regular visa; they cannot use the e-Visa system.
  2. For e-Visa applications: Go to the official Indian Visa Online portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa). Complete the online application form, ensuring all information matches your passport exactly. Upload a digital photograph (JPEG, min 10 KB, max 1 MB, equal height and width, white background, no spectacles) and a scanned copy of your passport bio page in PDF (10 KB – 300 KB). For business/medical/conference visas, also upload supporting documents (business card, invitation letter, hospital letter, etc.).
  3. Pay the e-Visa fee online using a credit/debit card. An additional bank transaction charge of 2.5% applies on the fee. Payment must be made at least 4 days before your expected date of travel, otherwise the application will not be processed. After payment, wait up to 2 hours for the payment status to update before re-applying.
  4. After submission, download and print the e-Visa acknowledgement. You do not need to visit a consulate. The e-Visa will be sent by email upon approval. Check the status online.
  5. For regular paper visas (e.g., for US citizens): Go to the Indian embassy or consulate website (e.g., indianembassyusa.gov.in) and fill the online visa application form through the VFS Global portal. Print the completed form, affix two passport-size photographs (2.5 x 2.5 inches, white background), sign it, and submit it in person or by post to the designated VFS Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) along with your passport, supporting documents, and visa fee. Book an appointment if submitting in person.
  6. For regular paper visas, the application will be processed by the Indian Mission/Post. Track your application on the VFS website. Upon approval, your passport with the visa sticker will be returned by mail or available for pickup.

Processing Times

Standard Processing

  • e-Visa: The official minimum processing time is 3 working days. However, as of 2026, approvals are taking 8 to 10 days in practice due to increased application volumes and enhanced background checks. Planning accordingly is advised, especially for business travelers and crew members.
  • Regular Paper Visa (through Indian Mission/Post): Minimum 3 working days for most nationalities, but processing may take longer depending on nationality, verification requirements, and workload of the issuing Mission. For applicants of Pakistani origin or descent, processing is substantially longer and may require additional administrative processing.
  • eVisa (Medical, Conference, etc.): Typically 2 to 3 business days for straightforward applications, but the general 8–10 day window applies for all e-Visa categories as of recent operational updates. Apply well in advance.

Peak Season

During peak travel periods (November–March, May–June), processing times may increase. It is advisable to apply at least 2 weeks before your intended departure for e-Visas, and 4–6 weeks for regular paper visas.

Denial & Appeals

Appeals Process

If your visa application is refused, you will receive a written notice explaining the reason(s). For regular paper visas, you may contact the Indian Mission/Post where you applied to seek clarification or request reconsideration; however, there is no formal appeal process. You can reapply with corrected or additional documentation. For e-Visa denials, the rejection is final; you may apply again with a fresh application, but the fee is not refunded.

Common Denial Reasons

  • Insufficient passport validity (less than 6 months from arrival date).
  • Incomplete or incorrect application details (name mismatches, photo not meeting specifications).
  • Not meeting the genuine visitor requirement – lack of sufficient funds, unclear itinerary, or absence of return/onward ticket.
  • Criminal record or security concerns.
  • For Pakistani passport holders or persons of Pakistani origin: additional scrutiny and longer processing; denial possible if documentation is incomplete.
  • Failure to provide required supporting documents (e.g., hospital letter for medical visa, business card for business visa).
  • Applying for the wrong visa category (e.g., journalists must apply for a journalist visa, not a tourist visa).

Stay Guidelines & Regulations

Passport Stamping

Ensure the immigration officer stamps your passport upon arrival. You will need this stamp to prove you did not overstay when you depart.

No Work Allowed

Tourist and e-Tourist visa holders are strictly prohibited from engaging in employment, paid activities, or conducting business without a valid business or employment visa.

Overstay Penalties

Overstaying your visa is illegal and can result in fines, visa cancellation, and a re-entry ban for a specified period. If you need to stay longer, apply for a visa extension through the Bureau of Immigration before your visa expires.

Visa Extension and Conversion

Short-term tourist visas generally cannot be extended. If you are hospitalized while on a tourist visa, you may be able to extend or convert to a medical visa. Apply to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Bureau of Immigration.

Registration with Authorities

Hotels, hostels, and other accommodation providers are required to register foreign guests with the FRRO using an online C-form. Ensure your accommodation registers you. If staying at a private residence for more than 180 days, you may need to register in person at the FRRO.

Mandatory E-Arrival Card

From October 2025, all foreign nationals have the option to complete an electronic arrival form (e-arrival card) online up to 72 hours before arrival. This is not a visa substitute but speeds up immigration. The paper arrival form is still accepted until March 2026.

Health Requirements

Vaccination Requirements

No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry. However, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, or if you have been in such a country for more than 24 hours. Without the certificate, you may be quarantined for up to 6 days upon arrival. Routine vaccinations (e.g., polio, hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus) are recommended but not required.

Health Examinations

Health examinations are generally not required for short-term visitors (tourism, business, e-Visa). However, for long-term stays (e.g., student or employment visas), a medical examination may be requested by the Indian Mission.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is not mandatory for visa issuance, but it is strongly recommended. Medical costs in private hospitals can be high. Travel insurance covering medical expenses is advisable.

Financial Requirements

e-Visa (Tourist, Business, Medical, Conference)

International travelers must have sufficient money to spend during their stay in India. There is no specified minimum amount, but you should be prepared to show evidence of funds (cash, credit cards, bank statements) if asked by immigration.

Student Visa Proof of Solvency

Applicants must provide a letter of support from a parent/guardian accompanied by a bank guarantee certificate or previous 6 months of bank statements, along with proof of tuition fee payment or sufficient liquid funds.

Regular Paper Visa (Tourist, Business, etc.)

Applicants may be asked to provide recent bank statements or pay slips as proof of financial capacity to cover travel, accommodation, and living expenses. The exact amount required depends on the duration and purpose of visit.

Customs Information

Customs Declaration

All travelers must declare any goods that are restricted or prohibited, including large quantities of currency, precious metals, and commercial samples. Complete a Customs Declaration Form (usually on the arrival card or separately).

Cash Declaration

You are required to declare cash, travelers’ cheques, or any other monetary instruments in your possession if the total value exceeds USD 5,000 (or equivalent) in cash or USD 10,000 (or equivalent) in combined monetary instruments.

Restricted and Prohibited Items

  • Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances are strictly prohibited.
  • Plants, fruits, seeds, soil, and animal products require a phytosanitary certificate and may be subject to quarantine.
  • Firearms, ammunition, and explosives require prior permission from the government.
  • Gold and silver bullion or coins above certain limits are restricted and must be declared.
  • Satellite phones, military-type equipment, and drones require special permits.

Duty-Free Allowance

Permanent residents and tourists arriving from certain countries may bring up to INR 50,000 worth of duty-free items (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, perfume) upon presentation of a valid ticket. Specific allowances vary; check with the Indian Customs Office before travel.

Biosecurity Laws

India has strict biosecurity regulations. Travelers must declare food, plant material, and animal products. Failure to declare may result in fines and confiscation.

Updates

e-Arrival Card introduced

From October 2025, all foreign travelers have the option to submit an electronic arrival form online (up to 72 hours before travel) as an alternative to the paper arrival card. The paper form will continue to be accepted until March 2026.

e-Visa Processing Time Increase

As of early 2026, e-Visa processing times have increased from a standard 72 hours to 8–10 days due to higher application volumes and enhanced background checks. While the official minimum remains 3 working days, applicants should plan for longer processing.

Visa fees revised for US nationals

Fees for regular paper visas (Tourist, Business, Entry, Employment, Student, etc.) were updated as per Embassy of India, Washington DC schedule (available on embassy website). e-Visa fees also adjusted for 30-day, 1-year, and 5-year tourist visas.

Iran suspends visa-free travel for Indian nationals

As of 22 November 2025, the visa-waiver facility for ordinary Indian passport holders visiting Iran has been suspended indefinitely.

Special Programs

OCI cardholders can travel to India without a visa, live and work indefinitely (with registration for certain activities), and own non-agricultural property. The OCI card is valid for life but must be renewed when a new passport is issued. Application is made through Indian Missions/Posts.

e-Medical Attendant Visa

Up to two attendants accompanying a patient on an e-Medical Visa can apply for an e-Medical Attendant Visa at the same fee (USD 80, approx. $80 USD). They can stay for the same duration as the patient (up to 60 days).

e-Student Dependent Visa (e-Family Visa)

Spouse and dependent children of e-Student visa holders can apply for an e-Miscellaneous Visa (e-Entry purpose) to accompany the student. Requires valid e-Student visa of the primary applicant and proof of relationship.
